In Reply to: Iguana for diner!!! posted by Flavia Guimaraes on August 19, 2002 at 20:27:05:
...In some parts of the world, they are considered not only fair game, but quite tasty. I have heard of them called "poulet d'arbre"... chicken of the tree. In some third world countries, the fact that they can be kept alive with little or no food or water for a long time is also considered a plus. Don't get me wrong, please...I have an iguana and do not in any way promote them as dinner. But we must accept the fact that there are places in this world where you eat what you can get IF you can get it. Take monkeys for example...still eaten in many places, but they are primates, for gosh sake!!! Fact is, if you are hungry, you will eat. There are many folks in this world who would love to have an iguana for dinner, but they will be lucky just to get a bowl of rice. Let's just keep ours healthy and happy, and not let anyone throw them on the grill. As far as being eaten as part of a "reality tv show" is concerned... I just don't know what to think. Those folks were plunked down in the iguana's habitat to make money for the network. They are not starving 3rd worlders with nothing better to eat.
:I use to post messages in a French iguana Forum also (Petit iguane deviendra grand-Small iguana will become big)and today I received lots of e-mails from french iguana people around the world complaining about a TV show exhibits on the french channel TF1.According to them on this show (called KOHLANTA) a few people that have been placed in an island, to avaliate their ability to survival in difficult conditions, have eaten an iguana soup. And their diner was showed on the television!!What do you think about??!!
:My french friends were furious and decided to write a letter complaining to Brigitte Bardot, the french star. Who remembers her??
