An iguana's tail will likely be less colorful towards the tip than towards its base. When Phil first came home with me, his tail was largely as you describe, dark brown with lighter brown stripes. after a few months of indulgent care and a few sheds, his tail began to show green in the light brown stripes. Now, every time he sheds it comes in a little greener.
That said, it's hard to tell if your ig's tail is healthy without a pic.
