Broken tail

My nearly 5 ft long female iguana fell and broke her tail, which then had to be amputated to about 12". The vet says it may rejuvenate if we don't apply antibiotic creme or ointment and have the end of her tail wrapped in gauze. Since Fred is about 7 years old, is there a chance of rejuvenation? Has anyone out there had any experience with this, as I am distraught!
