I think it would be fine if he gets time outside the cage. Just remember that they need it much hotter so you would have to set up basking spots or keep him in his cage for more time. He needs a lot of UV exposure and you can't always count on him getting it if he is a free roamer. Aside from his cage, you could set up a cool high perch with a UV / heat light above and he would "probably" want to stay there (but there are no guarantees). You have to think like an iguana!
Before you commit to this responsibility, have you thought about how long igs live? The longest one in captivity lived to be 29! It isn't fair to the animal if you don't commit to him-- you have college and your whole life to think about still ahead of you. They don't often allow pets in the dorm. This is one reason I waited until I was out of college. Also, are your parents willing to help pick up the slack if you need them to? Can you buy all the supplies and veggies and provide vet care? Just consider these issues before adopting. And I do commend you for adopting over buying. They do need a "forever" home, however. This is a great forum...we are here to offer support whatever your decision.
