I believe that my baby, Meggy, might be getting ready to lay eggs. I read back to some of the postings about this but still am not sure about it all.
Two years ago she suffered the metabolic calcium deficiency and almost died (yep, I was feeding her the wrong food per the book I had--spinach, dog food, carrots, bananas). She almost died but between my force feedings, a hospitalization which included tube feedings, and the vet prescribing an appetite stimulant, she pulled through. Hasn't missed a meal since but last week stopped eating. Is drinking lots of water and is acting very strange. Usually she stays in on her basking spot in her cage (6' X 6' X 2 1/2') or one the kitchen counter or the back of the couch when I watch TV. Now she is in constant motion, climbing to the floor of her cage, trying to get off the couch and counter, scratching on the newspaper, passing waste daily. From what I am reading, I believe she is about to lay eggs. I'm not sure if that was also a problem 2 years ago--the x-rays showed some round calcifications in her. I do have a kitty litter pan on the floor of her cage with sand in it and she has been spending time there. How long does all this take once they stop eating and start digging? I did read Melissa Kaplan's webpage about egg-laying. Is the schedule for egg-laying (all 8 weeks she mentions) the same for fertile and unfertile eggs? I read about making the egg box but then read the postings about people's iguanas not using them. Any suggestions there? Do you think she would use a litter pan filled with sand? Should I put a heating pad under the sandbox? Is it safe on a medium heat? When your iguana stops eating to lay eggs, do you try to get her to eat? She did eat some grapes (with vitamin/calcium powder hidden inside) and oranges last night but no greens. Had anyone had their iguana "fixed"? Is it dangerous? Sure would appreciate any suggestions out there. Meggy is my first iguana and I have zero experience.
