I have found that Tegus tend to tame down as easily or more so than igs. What is also true is that young inexperienced people tend to buy the Colombian Black and White Tegus because they are the most available at pet shops and are fairly cheap. I adopted a colombian and he was ok, but not as tame as my current Paraguyan Red.
The Red is extremely tame and is allowed to wander all day in an enclosed outside garden. It also seems to be true that most Tegus do not like to be handled or picked up - although I am sure there are exceptions.
