Propane? hmm... doesn't sound good. Get those CHE's out there and look at them! Like cwatbay said, maybe there's something stuck in th CHE's? Plug the CHE into a socket (outside the cage) and look at it. Is it really coming from the CHE? maybe its coming from something in the cage?

Or maybe there's a wire that is getting overheated or something?

Also, maybe its frying some dead food or feces under that heat? God-knows what smells those two produce! ^.~

I dunno, just keep looking and stick to regular bulbs for heat for now.
