In Reply to: A Little Help Concerning CHE...PLEASE?? posted by TOG on July 27, 2002 at 10:06:50:

First I can only guess without having pics of your set ups.

Your CHE's do not emit fumes or gases themselves unless there was something stuck to them like plastic, glue, paint, etc.

It could be the socket(ie: something attached to the ceramic socket, the electrical cord or the reflector.

Since CHE's do produce a lot of heat, anything in the vacinity of the CHE could be heating up and releasing gases- screen top, paint, any plastic, plexiglass, etc. You should inspect the whole area around and beneath the CHE to see what is heating up and releasing gas or fumes.

Technically, if the CHE is properly set up, there should be absolutely no smell at all.

Also, take it for granted that the gases or fumes are toxic both to you and the animal. Especially for the animal since they are right there and will be getting a concentrated dose of toxins- plus animals can be more succeptable to lower doses of toxins since their immune systems are not as efficient as ours ( imagine this: paint the inside of your closet, then lock yourself in it for 24 hours - that is pretty much what your animal is going through).

As I said before, thoroughly inspect the entire enclosure for what is heating up and releasing fumes.
