Crypto is a one-celled parasite

It's one of those critters that follows the fecal/oral route of contamination, so people get it from drinking water contaminated with fecal matter, or by practicing poor hygiene when handling animals, changing diapers of an infected baby, etc.

It's one of the nasty critters that can sicken humans nearly as easily as herps if the immune system is compromised.

In the situation in SC, a 7 year old girl is in the hospital with crypto after both her grandmother and parents bought leopard geckos that died almost as soon as they were brought home.
