In Reply to: GODZILLA told me he wants to bite Mr Frank Indiviglio!!! posted by GODZILLA's MOM on July 22, 2002 at 23:14:01:
"I think they are the worst lizard you could pick as a pet," said Frank Indiviglio, a herpetologist at the Bronx Zoo in New York City's northern borough. "Chances are, a bite or salmonella is going to come about sooner or later." ... "They're really a high-maintenance animal," Indiviglio said. "It's not like having a goldfish."
realistically, the man has a point! (+ maybe his comment just reads kind of the wrong way ...?)
iguanas DO NOT make "good pets" ~ at least, not in the way that most people define a "pet" ...
iguanas ARE *wild animals* ~ they ARE very intelligent and can learn (or decide?!) to trust people ~ *IF* we *earn* that trust ... but they do not "automatically" love people, not the way domesticated animals (puppies/kittens) do ...
iguanas are prey, where as the puppies/kittens are the preditors ... naturally, iguanas are going to be more cautious, more leery of people ... (rabbits are also "prey" ... i love my bunny boys, but i would NOT recommend them to *just anyone* as a "great pet" ~ it's alot of work to earn a bun's trust, compared to Milo-puppy!)
i'm tired + i'm rambling + i don't know if i'm making sense ...
with all the poor igs (AND puppies/kittens/bunnies/etc!) out there that are abused and don't have happy homes, i really can't find fault with someone like Mr. I who points out what SHOULD be common sense ~> iguanas need ALOT of care, you do not just put them in a tank and throw food in 1-2x a day ...
too many people (myself included!) have brought an animal home without having a clue how to take proper care of it ... and the awful truth is, not everyone cares enough to FIND a place like this forum and learn ...
in a perfect world, we'd think to learn about the animal FIRST and then bring it home ...
but it's NOT a perfect world and so when people like Frank Indiviglio seize the opportunity to make at least a FEW parents say "No junior, you may NOT have an iguana!" ~ i'm darned glad!!!
most humans "look down" on animals ~ they can't "talk", so they have no intelligence to speak of ... yeah, right! :P
and since cold-blooded animals aren't cute/fuzzy/warm/etc, they are even LESS intelligent and obviously have no feelings/emotions!
truthfully, i'd rather have more people like Mr. I than like Steve Irwin (tho he IS really *kewl*!) ...
people can't even make a commitment to keep a dog or cat for goddess sake! they get a cat, 5 yrs later they decide to move and so they just get rid of the cat ... *ARG*
now, if people do that to warm fuzzies ........
the problem with the world is that humons think just cuz they're at the top of the food chain, they're better than the (other) animals ...
i think animals are a heckuva lot smarter than 99% of the humons ...
*heavy sigh*
i need to shut up + go to bed ...
i just wanted to tell Godzilla to NOT take Mr. I's remark as an insult, cuz i don't think that's how it was intended ... :)
*headrubbies* for Godzilla and ALL!!!
*yawn*
Bon.
(+ i'm starting to feel bad for the goldfishies as well ...)
