I think that you will find the answers to most of your questions from what the magic link-lizard gave you. Most of the time leashes aren't recommended. I use a leash because I have cats and dogs and can't afford to have a missing ig. It might not be me that finds by beloved Sneakers. Sneakers is small right now and the leash I use just goes up around the back section of her body, above her back legs. I make sure that the little rope comes together above her spikes forming a "V" above them. Her spikes in this area are very little right now and the leash doesn't hurt them. As she gets bigger I think that I will have to give up the leash.
If you are going to use a leash for a little while, I don't recommend buying it out of the pet store. The one I bought had a metal clippy thing that was to heavy. I would go to a sewing store and buy 6ft of little cotton rope, like you would thread through a jacket hood and then a plastic push button end of string thing. Sorry don't know the name. Its the gizmo that goes on the end of the hood or jacket strings that you push in one end and it release the string. You double thread the 6ft cotton string through the opening and and your done. Cost is probably $2 - $3. Just make sure the push button gizmo is light weight and as small as you can get.
