Many years ago I was taught the 80/20 plan and it will help explain many people's behavior.

In sales, I was taught that 20% of your clients will account for 80% of your business. So, you should make extra effort to satisfy that 20%.

Being rather observant, I noticed that many things in life follow the 80%/20% ratio. For instance: 80% of the shows on TV are pure crap, while 20% are half way worth watching. 80% of the information you get is wrong, 20% is close to the truth. 80% of what you learn is school is totally worthless, while 20% of it is valuable enough to remember ( if you are lucky, you actually remember about 5% of what you learn ).

When it comes to people on the face of the planet, I would say out of those I have met ( both in the US and outside of it, although I would say that most of the world is smarter than uis) the 80%/20% works pretty well. 80% of the people on the planet are compelte blubbering morons, who through dumb luck have managed to live as long as they have, 20% are more or less smart enough not to pollute the gene pool and insure the demise of the human race.

So, for your own peace of mind and ability to sleep at night, simply profile your family and inlaws as to whether they are part of the majority or minority.
