cage size vs. temp regulation

My fiancee and I have a 2 1/2 yr old male ig who is probably a little over 3ft long. In our current apartment we have a rather odd walk-in closet where the ig's cage is. Obviously we still spend time with him etc etc, but as we also have two cats and it is an older apartment it is very nice to be able to close the door which keeps cats out and the heat and humidity in. Now the cage we currently have him in is about 3 1/2 ft tall by 3 ft deep and 3 1/2 ft wide. we are concerned we may need a larger cage. If so, we would most likely be unable to use the modified closet anymore and then we would have to deal w/more difficulty reagulating temp and we would also have to deal with the cats, whom Rage (the ig) is not too fond of. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
