LACROSSE TRIBUNE (Wisconsin) 26 June 02 Itch is back (Randy Erickson)
People don't need to worry about running into a miniature Godzilla on the streets of South Side La Crosse anymore.
Itch the iguana has been scratched from the missing list.
The 41/2-foot-long lizard's three-day furlough ended Wednesday afternoon when she was found a yard away from her home at 607 Farnam St.
Itch had gotten away from April and Josh Thompson on Sunday afternoon after they had taken Itch and their other iguana, Iggy, outside to soak up the sun.
Although previous days' searches had been fruitless, Josh Thompson and a neighbor were out with binoculars Wednesday, scanning the treetops when they happened to glance down for a moment and found Itch straddling a neighbor's fence.
"She was basically in the back yard," said April Thompson. "It didn't even dawn on us to look anywhere but up."
Itch appears to be none the worse for her brief taste of freedom, though Thompson said the lizard is having a hard time adjusting to captivity again. "She's a little spooked from being captured again," she said.
Thompson said it was a happy ending if there ever was one and not only because Itch was reunited with her family. "Now," she said, "we don't have to worry about the ecosystem being damaged by a giant lizard."
