Kate,
Thanks for all the great input. Zeb's in a wire-mesh cage. Even though he's on the porch during the day, I have a fluorescent light and a reptile "basking light" set up for him (I'm pretty certain that the combination of these give him the UV-A and UV-B he needs. The cage is pretty big (about 24" tall, 24" wide and 18" deep). It won't be long though until I get him a bigger habitat. Every day I get him out of the cage and handle him. I also let him run around the sun-porch when I'm there to supervise (my in-home office is only a few feet away, so I can do work and watch him at the same time).
I've read other warnings about the heat rock issue... and have since been careful to use it ONLY on occasions where I have a burned out heat lamp (oh, and at night I use a red heat lamp).
He's been eating a lot of romaine lettuce and spinach. Today I gave him cooked peas, carrots and beans. Frankly, he's eating better than I do.
I think he's going to be pretty happy. I'm trying to handle him every day for at least 15 minutes. From what I've read he's in his "rebellious teen" years right now (they told me he's about 2 years old). So he's pretty aggressive. I start out handling him with leather work-gloves and then remove those once he has settled down.
Anyway, thanks again for the input. Let me know if anything I've posted seems like a bad idea.
Best!
Joe
