Sounds like you have taken on a serious responsibility... That aquarium is WAY too small (the ig sounds pretty small for 5 years, too)... What kind of care instructions did you receive from the previous owners? Judging by the size of the cage they kept him in, they may have been less than well-educated about the iguana's needs.
That said, don't be surprised if your guest doesn't eat for a day or two; iguanas do not react well to change. If you can get him settled in, his appetite will probably perk up.
YES, wire mesh can be VERY DANGROUS. If you are going to use any sort of mesh, make sure it is PVC-coated hardware cloth (the green stuff) because it will not hurt your ig if it catches his claws.
I would get rid of the commerical iguana food (a produce diet is better for the ig and far less expensive to boot). Collard, mustard, radish greens, etc. should be a staple. Supplement with a variety of squashes and other vetgetables and use fruit as a treat.
