for iZ's nails ...
when he was smaller, i didn't even need to clip the nails, i'd just rub them with the emory board every couple days + smooth off that little needle-like point ... (*yeouch*)

igs nails grow *really* fast and so they need more frequent attention than say, a dog's nails ...

but like xta said, once an ig gets very big, their claws will scratch ~ no matter *how* smooth + rounded + UN-sharp the tips are ...
then, i think it's a matter of trying to "explain" to your ig that s/he doesn't really need to hold on *quite* that tightly ... :)
(iZ used to leave little *bruises* on my upper arm from holding on!)
