: The third knock was much louder, accompanied by a familiar voice. "Open up, lazybones! Are you sleeping or what?" It was my friend Mark, a vet who volunteers at the Humane Society. I opened the door and there he was with a cardboard box and a small snake bag inside it. "Here's your iguana, you might want to give it a bath because it's really hot out there. I gotta run, I'm doing a spay at noon."

: So I went into the bathroom, closed the door and opened the snake bag. As if I needed prompting to give a reptile a tubber. That's one of the great joys of herping.

: What do you think, Flavia? Am I a boy or a girl? Mom thinks I look like a boy because of how big I extended my dewlap when she put me in my cage, but I just might surprise her in a year or so.

: Mom blessed my sweet little turquoise snout. I think she likes me!
