Having said that, the information passed out at the majority of pet shops is INCORRECT.

NO, things like lettuce, crickets, spinach, chicken, or ANY form of animal protein should NOT be a part of a captive iguana's diet.

YES, they need specialized lighting in the form of UVB emitting bulbs.

NO, "full spectrum lighting" does not get the job done as it doesn't necessarily produce any UVB.

NO, hot rocks should most definitely NOT be used for anything other than a paperweight on a desk or a basking rock in an enclosure setup - but ONLY if the electrical cord has been cut before being placed in the enclosure.

YES, the internet can be an excellent source of information IF used properly in conjunction with one's own thought processes and common sense. If information appears on several sites chances are that it is correct information but this is not always so. Think about what you are reading and see if it makes sense to you before you decide to believe it.

Get a copy of James Hatfield's book "Green Iguana: The Ultimate Owners' Manual". It will provide you with the necessary basic concepts of iguana husbandry. Feel free to stop by our site and peruse it - but DO NOT believe everything you read there if that is the only site you've studied. Examine previous forum posts and determine the experienced participants and see if they have their own web pages - many do. Study them. The people here have a wealth of information at their disposal PROVIDED that you are willing to do your own research as well.

"Intelligent, articulate questions are always welcome but intellectual spoonfeeding is not an option."

This public service announcement has been brought to you by insomnia and stress. We now return you to your regularly scheduled forum...
