I went back on to some open files and pulled up a quote re two other iguanas' mouth "symptoms" that had been diagnosed with mouth rot: They read:

"...had mouth rot last year. The only symptoms she had were
crusties around her mouth. No open sores or obvious junk in her
mouth.
She had gotten very dark colored, stayed in the cooler end of her
cage, and stopped eating."

"...there are no actual or open *sores* in his mouth, there's a reddish area towards the back of his throat ... last nite (on baytril 48 hrs), his saliva was so thick he couldn't swallow ... i swabbed the thick gunk from his mouth + rinsed his mouth with warm water (nose pointed to the floor so the water would just run out) ... he's only eaten a few bites the last couple days ~ it's just hard for him to swallow still ... his throat looks sore + is swollen a bit ... his face looks swollen, but not sure if it really *is* or if i'm just seeing normal dysmorphic characteristics .."

As you can see neither of these says *exactly* what you list as your ig's symptoms but what you had said was enuf to make me think back to these. The 1st one who just had crusty places...my male ig gets this quite frequently but it isn't an infection *grin* it's because he's a slob! So altho I jumped to yours having something terribly wrong, I also know that it can always be nothing to be concerned about. And I certainly hope that is the case for you!!

Re gram negative. You are probably right about articles assuming iguanas already have salmonella and, therefore, have gram negative bacteria floating around. I know that even after having iguanas for 8 years my father-in-law still sends me articles he runs across re igs giving family members salmonella. *sigh* Frankly, I'm much more worried about the people handling my food at dining places making me ill than I have EVER been of any of our reptiles *grin*
