Like J-P said, females can become egg-bound, that is, holding unfertile eggs inside, and eventually rot inside. Not a pretty picture.
Males will want to beat the heck outta ya once a year or so, breeding season. They also like to 'mate' with anything that can simulate a female iguana.
U cannot sex them until they show sexual dimorphism after 2 years of age or more. Even then, some people still confuse the sexes.
U may aquire a 'teenager' and have it sexed by a pro, such as a vet or someone who know how to probe lizards and such.
Just give it a changeable name (like 'Pat').
Males become larger and more territorial. Females, being smaller, may be an advantage for cage sizing etc.
The surest (and partly, more noble) way is to adopt a homeless iguana. Often they come already tamed and their sex is known. U'll be doing the animal a favor, and urself knowing watcha got.
Good luck, n ask if u got more q's.
