When Squig, then called Ziggy, came into the rescue last September he had an obvious old break in his tail. The tail was very floppy from the point of the break to the end and he had no control over it. He also had some scars toward the end of the tail that I assumed were burn scars. Within weeks he developed an infection in the tail that started with blisters, then the skin and scales just lifted, dried up and had to be removed. It took us 2 months to get the wounds healed and we almost amputated then, just above the infection. Earlier this month a section of his tail started to blister again. I was very surprised when I was examining the infected spot and had one hand on his tail above the break and one hand below the break. The difference in temperature was amazing. That's when I realized that the circulation to his tail was greatly impaired and that this had been an ongoing problem before we took him in. After consulting with his vet it was decided that the tail must go. Hopefully the procedure will allow him to regain some health and vigor that months of fighting infections and enduring antibiotic injections robbed him of. Squig is the sweetest boy and was patient and cooperative thru all of his treatments. To me he's still very beautiful and special.

Here's a picture of part of his infected tail during the healing process. This section is almost 5 inches long.
