When I was a child, my mother kept two iguanas for the family and didn't know anything about caring for them. Their tails turned black and my mother, who has a "disposable" attitude toward pets--you would not beleive the number of animals that were purchased and then either euthanized, sold, or given away on a whim. my father had a dog that barked too much; we came home one day to find the dog had been taken to the pound--waited for the blackened bits to fall off instead of taking the igs to a vet (needless to say, both iguanas had severely stunted lifespans). I suspect, but am not sure, that this was due to extremely poor living conditions, primarily a rarely cleaned glass cage that promoted rapid growth of fungus and bacteria. (being twelve at the time I didn't know enough to demand they be moved to better quarters). As an adult, I keep (and spoil) an iguana of my own and have had no difficulties with blackening or darkening limbs.
It would be difficult to say whether my experience is similar to yours without a photograph, but if this sounds familiar I would be off to the vet first thing tomorrow if possible.
