If body temps are below normal igs can turn darker and can fan their dewlap in order to absorb more heat/light. As the body temp regulates the color will lighten. If they begin to overheat, the mouth will open to help expel internal heat. I also heard a theory that the spikes are also used to assist in controlling heat much the same way that Stegasaurus used their plates.
