Absolutely, Craig. The more public awareness regarding any "rescue group" the better. However, in many cases, reptile rescues for example, the organizations are small "backyard" operations with little to no budget to care for what animals they have in house let alone having to advertise. You'd be surprised just how quickly word gets around down here when there is suddenly a place for people to leave their animals. We actually had turned down approximately 40 phone calls & e mails from people wanting to give us their iguana even before Broken Reptile was officially created. We were actually getting inquiries from as far as Kansas and Texas and that is without ANY advertising.

Making a phone number public does one of two things. If the ogranization can afford to have a seperate business line installed, it's yet one more expense that needs to be covered every month AND somone needs to be available at some point in the day to answer the phone or return phone calls.
If the organization cannot/does not want a seperate line installed then the only option is to publish a residential listing. Even when anonymity is requested, there are ways to find out residential addresses through telephone numnbers which could possibly increase the number of "midnight dropoffs" which is why it may not be the best idea to make the phoine number of the rescue publically known - especially if the operation is small and can only handle a few animals at a time. Nothing like waking up one morning and finding a 15' Burm or 6' Nile Croc on your front doorstep with a big bow around it....

Just because someone has a "rescue license" doesn't necessarily mean that they want/need to be operating as a rescue at the time of the license issuance. Making sure that a group is properly licensed, etc. I can completely understand. Forcing them to advertise especially if the city/county/state in which they operate does not offer any form of financial support could be absolutely detrimental to an operation in its infancy. It's not so much being publicly accessable as it is being publicly accessable when an organization is ready to be publicly accessable. If an organization is forced to be publicly accessable before they are ready it could mean a quick death for the organization if they are not ready financially, politically, or with appropriate staff. Yes, I said politically. You would not in your wildest dreams believe just how political the entire "rescue" world is. It's amazing to me just how quickly humans forget that the organizations that they form are created to care for animals and not for their own agendas.
