Let's examine sections of this more closely. I'll even do it without throwing in my own 2 cents for a minute....

** These reptiles are excellent pets and usually very docile and enjoy handling. **

** Iguanas have short powerful limbs equipped with strong share (sp. sharp) claws for climbing and long strong tail.** - "These reptiles are excellent pets and usually very docile and enjoy handling."

**They grow to a length of 6 feet.** - "These reptiles are excellent pets and usually very docile and enjoy handling."

**When cornered iguanas can defend themselves with astonishingly quick, whip-like lashes of their tails and with their claws and jaws.** - "These reptiles are excellent pets and usually very docile and enjoy handling."

**Iguanas are not particularly sociable animals and are quite territorial.** - "These reptiles are excellent pets and usually very docile and enjoy handling."

**The addition of cage mate invites unnecessary aggression and fighting.** -

**Common Diseases Treatment
: Most common disease is due to malnutrition. Particular attention to calcium supplementation is essential in young growing iguanas because they are prone to calcium deficiencies. The most common mistake is feeding on exclusive vegetable diet which has low calcium and vitamin mineral supplements. Signs of fibrous osteo-dystrophy include general listlessness, and enlarged, swollen lower jaw, difficulty in eating, and markedly firm, swollen limbs and tail. Unfortunately, these desperately ill iguanas appear well-fed and chubby and veterinarian care is not often sought until it is too late.** - "These reptiles are excellent pets and usually very docile and enjoy handling."

Ok... Now my 2 cents. I don't know where this "information" was lifted from but the website was, in my opinion, written by someone promoting Zeigler's products - whatever they are. Commercial reptile "diets" for the most part and with very few exceptions are completely and totally useless. Never in my experience have I seen or heard of iguanas munching on "pellet bushes" in the wild.

** Metabolic bone diseases Should be treated by balancing the lettuce with a top dressing with Zeigler's Iguana Diet which has got a high calcium and mineral supplement. Iguanas must be exposed to direct sunlight for vitamin D3.**

Metabolic Bone Disease is caused by, among other things, diets consisting of lettuce to begin with. The reasoning here is that lettuce, in ANY form, contains little to no nutritional value WHATSOEVER.

The simple fact that this site is promoting the feeding of ANY form of lettuce tells me that this is simply NOTHING MORE than a promotion for Zeigler products cleverly disguised as some sort of "care sheet". Water leeching from the lettuce may soften the pellets making them easier for an iguana to eat/digest. Yes, the ig may appear healthy but it may be from the commercial diet and certainly not form feeding any form of lettuce. If the pellets are not properly hydrated before being ingested there is also a risk of an ig becoming impacted from the very thing that it is being fed as "proper diet". Also, does this commercial "diet" contain artificial D3 at all? If so, there is a chance that D3 levels in the bloodstream of an iguana being fed this commercial "diet" while being exposed to UV light of either natural or artificial form could become toxic.

If fed a PROPER diet of leafy greens and various vegetables and occassional fruit there is ABSOLUTELY NO NEED FEED ANY SORT OF COMMERCIAL PRODUCT REGARDLESS OF IT'S CALCIUM OR NUTRITIONAL CONTENT.

Just because a website is "well known" does not mean that the information it contains is correct.
