another (dumb?) question

I have checked around and I am going to paint the enclosures with a latex, no fume water based paint. It is scrubable and durable. I checked on melimine and they can tear it apart, the wrap. The vet said this should be okay, input??? And what kind of safe plants can I grow in it, I know they eat hibiscus, nasturtiums roses and dandelion, all of which I grow for them, some one also mentioned some herbs. Will the potted soil hurt them and no fertilizer right unless like a natural compost? Thanks again
