: I am glad you chose those two . Neither MK or JS has seen a green iguana in there natural habitat ask them . Animal protein in large amounts ( as with most any food ) is not good . However animal protein is NOT a toxin and a little will not cause any harm . I have been debating MK on AOL for years . She has very little hands on experience with iguanas ask her yourself . I digress from the point . Fact number one no iguana has ever died from eating a ( note the word A ) cricket or any other piece of animal protein . Fact number two large amounts of animal protein are known to cause kidney problems . In tune with that an iguana feed a diet of nothing but collard greens will also not be healthy .
: Please note my point here is not to tell anybody to feed there iguana animal protein . My point is that it is not a toxin or a danger in small amounts . I have taken in many iguanas feed a diet of crickets , meal worms and chicken ( MK used to tell people that at least 10 percent of an iguanas diet should be animal protein until about 5 years ago ) as this was believed to be the best diet at the time . I have one rescue that I adopted out to a friend 10 years ago when he was 5 and was feed crickets for those first five years . He is 15 and in great health no kidney problems or any other problems for that matter . Again this is not saying you should try this . I would also tell you that most iguanas sold in pet stores come from Fluker farms . Fluker feeds animal protein in high amounts to there iguanas to bulk them up fast .
