They don't know, and usually they will go to where the heat is rather than go to where the UV light is. The best way to set your enclosure up is to put the UV light as close as possible to the heat source, and try to keep it under eighteen inches, preferably twelve though.
So, in answer to your question, no, iguanas don't know if they have UVB or not, but just because they don't know doesn't mean not having it won't kill them faster.

John-Paul: I am so curious, if I put 2 basking areas, one with uvb and one without...would they go to the one with uvb lights??? do you know?? it just came up my mind yesterday night and since then i can't stop thinking about it...thanks you
