According to, I believe, Hatfield iguanas can actually see in the ultraviolet spectrum. How this was determined escapes me at the moment. But, like Xta, I've had simliar experiences which is why, in the past, it was always recommended to locate UV sources in close proximity to heat/basking sources. With the advent of the merc vapor bulbs both can now be accomplished simultaneously.
The particular "coloration" of light or CRI (color rendition index - someone correct me please, it's late) really shouldn't have that much effect on an animal as far as health is concerned. CRI, from everything that I've read, is actually geared more toward the "lighting" of an animal for accurate color represenation which is more of a "human" preference than a reptile "requirement". As long as the animals are receiving the best possible amount of UV producing light, the CRI of a particular light source isn't a great concern to me. How an animals color "appears" is not nearly as important as the animal being healthy.
Anyone else?
