Without actually talking to the people at T-Rex for specifics, from appearance alone the flood pattern bulbs have a diffusion coating over the glass whereas the spot bulbs are clear glass. Definitely keep an eye on temps if you use a spot bulb in an ig application. Depending on the size of the enclosure and the proximity of the ig to it, the bulb may simply throw too much heat and COULD end up burning the ig.
As long as you can gauge the correct wattage bulb for the enclosure you should be all set. These days, we use nothing but merc vapors here as in zero fluo tubes. Over the course of a year, the mercs are more cost effective, produce more UVB and also produce heat. We do all of our business at HerpSupplies.com and get the bulbs for $50-55. There are times when they WILL have a sale on bulbs and you can luck out and pick them up for $40-45.
We're currently running 23 mercs here (yes 23 x$50... Don't remind me) with nothing but excellent results - as far as the animals are concerned. Unfortunately for the humans, it feels like summer arrived here about 2 weeks ago...;)
Hope that helps...
