I had a similar experience with a ball python just last summer. I had him for about 3 weeks and my wife found him , well, you know the rest.
It turned out to be a congenital disease that the whole litter had (IMV or stargazer's or something to that effect).
Don't think that it's your fault. Like others have posted, it is so hard to tell illnesses until it's too late. Don't give up, either!
