We went up to the Reptile show in Raleigh today to volunteer at our rescue group's booth (triangleiguanarescue.com). Anyway, a guy came up to us and asked if we had any iguanas that do tricks. He said they don't have many contestants and there were cash prizes. So, I got this hairbrained idea and decided to try it. The first contestant was another of our Igs and she was pretty cold and not too responsive. Cute though! Definitely cute! The second was a large pretty bird that the owner claimed would sing Old MacDonald if you sang along with her....GONG. Didn't sing. The third was a pot-bellied pig that they were trying to get to sit. They were even feeding the poor thing Code Red! Would you give that to your animal? DUH! Anyway, after about 5 minutes of coaxing, he finally sat down. Probably more cause he was tired than the food enticing. Then came Baby..
I had borrowed a small piece of bread from a friend's sandwich and I marched up there with him and said how much iguana's like bread and that Baby would do just about anything for it. (I remembered to mention that we recommmend VERY limited amounts and that wheat was much better for them.)
I told them that I could get Baby to stand on his hind legs and beg for the bread. So, I put it up to his snout and slowly started raising my arm. It was so hillarious. He slowly moved upward, following the bread until he was sitting fully on his haunches. Everyone loved it, especially since they didn't have to wait 5 minutes for him...it was more like 5 seconds! *grin*
The last one was a Camel that drank pepsi from a bottle...Big Whoopdidoo! NOT! I mean, what kind of crazy people feed soda to their animals?!
So, Baby won a hundred bucks and I bought a $20 Reptisun bulb and donated the rest to our Rescue Group. Boy were they happy!
What a great day! J
PS....everyone raved over Baby. He was a big hit. Sorry if it sounds like I'm bragging, but well....I am! LOL
