about 30 seconds to draw a blood sample from the tail vein on my iguana Bug, and his tail looks like a small baseball bat, and just as hard. How muscular the tail is has nothing to do with drawing blood, just experience in doing it a great deal. If your vet has trouble drawing blood, this indicates that your vet doesn't do reptile blood work very often.
All late research, and all "conventional wisdom" from knowledgeable iguana keepers have proven the absolute necessity of UVB radiation to the health of iguanas. They, as do we humans, synthesize vitamin d through skin exposure to the sun(UVB). No sun exposure, no vitamin d. No vitamin d, improper calcium utilization, and subsequent calcium deficency problems. It can take years for these problems to become apparent in adults.
Bottom line is, do your ig a favor, and supply UVB to him.
