LIZARD LADY DECISION ANGERS RSPCA
THE RSPCA said this week it was disappointed Island magistrates did not ban the Island's lizard lady, Susan Wallace, from keeping pets.
The organisation said 47-year-old Wallace, of The Close, Seaview, who hit the headlines for hurling her pet iguana at two policemen and a pub doorman, should have been banned from keeping animals after being found guilty of two counts of causing unnecessary suffering to her pet, Igwig, while drunk.
After Wallace received a six-month community rehabilitation order from Island magistrates, RSPCA inspector Tony Summers said: "We are extremely disappointed that someone who has shown such scant regard for the welfare of their pet has not been banned from keeping animals.
"Iguanas should not be taken out on social occasions by their owners, particularly to pubs full of people, smoke, noise and movement, which could be stressful for the animal.
"Reptiles can excrete salmonella, which is not ideal in a public environment."
Magistrates ordered Wallace to pay £50 compensation to doorman John Rosenthal, £35 for breaking a window at the Anchor pub, Cowes, £85 to the RSPCA for looking after Igwig and £250 costs.
Her solicitor, Roger Merry, told the court on Tuesday she apologised to the people involved.
Wallace had no comment as she left court.
