In Reply to: Nate's not so varied diet... posted by Oliver on April 05, 2002 at 10:11:35:
Well living outside can be a plus...as long as he has some shade too. He should get plenty of UV at least!
As far as your diet...it needs some serious work. Kale is not a good choice as a staple. You will need to use some of the following instead: collards, mustards, turnip greens, endive/escarole, dandelion, watercress. Interchange them-- mix and match so he doesn't get the same each week. You can use various squash, and once in awhile green beans and peas, and a little fruit like melons, mango, berries.
If your Publix doesn't have this, you need to try some other stores or farmer's markets. South Florida will have some of these because I live in FL and greens are abundant...you just may have to go somewhere else. Also, you can request that the produce manager carry some of these items...many times they will. Publix here always has collards and watercress and sometimes mustard greens and turnip greens. Winn Dixie has some too. Please don't skimp on the diet because his health will be affected and he may be acting up because he doesn't feel well from an imbalanced diet.
He may not like the greens at first, but he will accept them eventually. You may have to mix in some kale at first just to switch him over, but I'm sure he will naturally like some of those especially if you cut everything up smaller and mix in fruit and various veggies-- he won't be able to pick stuff out. Most igs love sweet fruit! And forget about the pellets...they are junk and only to be used in emergencies. Check out this site for more nutritional information.
