It is not known how much can or does cause harm . It is know that large amounts on a regular basis can cause kidney problems . I know of many iguanas that where raised with animal protein as a regular part of there diet ( 5 years ago this was thought to be the right thing to feed them ) with no ill effects . The facts are that iguanas are built to eat and digest plant matter best . It is also known that wild animals do take bugs and other forms of animal protein I would add that it is not known weather they do this because of lack of other food or because of instinct . Jesus Riva did a study on wild iguanas in 1996 he caught wild green iguanas and " flushed" there stomachs he did this to 365 iguanas he found 125 different plants he says he did not find any trace of animal protein in any of them .

So all that said lets look at the logical side of this .We know a large amount can cause problems . We know that iguanas can and have lived long lives eating a little animal protein . We know there are studies that say that they do eat animal protein and there are some that say they do not . It boils down to common sense . Regardless of what side of this debate you wish to believe it comes down to one simple question .

Is it worth the CHANCE and are you willing to put your animals life on the line for that chance ?

It just does not make sense to take that gamble .
