Hi John - I have a cat named Bogart that I got from a rescue shelter a few years ago - he has SEVEN toes on each of his feet! I call him "Monkey-Feet" sometimes when he is walking toward me! He can open doors too! - He is a BIG boy - very tall, weighs in at 14.5 pounds!
Anyway - the reason I posted was for a name suggestion - How 'bout "Hemingway" as in Ernest - he owned many polydactyl cats, in fact, the only cats he would have were polydactyl. To this day, you can visit Hemingway's home in Key West, FL and see many decendants of the multi-toed cats.
Bogart was almost named Hemingway, 'cept Hubby liked Bogart better...
Here's some pics of my boy and a link to more...
Enjoy!
Michelle
PS The other kitty in the pics is Ginger, Bogart's sister - she has "normal", petite toes. When I got them there was also a third litter-mate, another female that was already spoken for or I would have come home with her too. She had 5 toes on front and 6 on the back...
: For the last few days,Mary and I have been trying to decide on taking in a special critter. While buying cat and dog food Friday at petsmart, we were checking out the animals for adoption, as we always do. We really don't have room for much more, and our jobs preclude having many animals, but every now and then, you get hit with something that you just know you have to do...
:
: As we looked at the cats, I noticed one named "Mr. Bigfoot", so I checked him out closely, and sure enough, there was a polydactyl cat! (Polydactyl= A genetic trait which breeds true, and causes multiple toes) None of the rescue personell knew what it was, and all thought he was really freaky. They were having a hard time adopting him out, because no one wanted a deformed cat. He's not deformed, just special. All of these toes work! When he walks, it looks like he has thumbs on the front feet!
: Well, after a few days of thought, today we adopted him! We were afraid someone would finally get him that didn't know what he was, and not treat him accordingly. Polydactyl cats should not be declawed, and sometimes need a little special care on the toes. He's a sweetheart.
: Here's a couple of quick pics, and I'll get some better ones to post later.
: I don't think he'll stay "Mr. Bigfoot" Any name suggestions?

: How about those feet?

: Looks like he has 7 on the front, and 6 on the back...
: Sorry to be off topic, but just wanted to share this....
