In Reply to: Mineral Oil for stuck spike shed? posted by j on March 24, 2002 at 01:54:11:
Try soaks in the tub first, if the spike shed is still being stubborn, I rub on some mineral oil. Let it get absorbed by the shed and skin. Then gently rub each individual spike (whichever have the bad shed) between your finger tips. I emphsize the word gently.
Are you sure they are really a bad shed, or just a late one? Don't fret too much, it should come off with some good soaks. The rescue I recently had, had layers of shed on her spikes. I soaked her, and then took some fine tipped manicure scissors to cut a little snip at the base of the shed, this relieved the constriction on her spike, and her shed came off soon after. This is only for the most serious situations, and for those with steady hands!
I repeat, just good warm soaks should do the trick. It's hard to maintain a high level of humidity in the winter, soaking helps a lot. In the wild, iguana's would take dips in nearby streams and rivers whenever they wanted. With us, we control their lives- we must give them the same stimulation and mimic their natural environment to the best of their abilities.
