El Salvador or other so called "blue" iguanas are not rare at all; they
are nothing different than the regular common green iguana, species
Iguana iguana. It is perfectly legal to have them anywhere you can have a green iguana.
They sell for 10 dollars or less at many places.
There are lots of different types of iguanas to choose from if you are looking for a different type of iguana.
If you want a smaller one than the green iguana stay away from
rhino (Cyclura Cornuta) and the Cuban (cyclura nubila nubila).
*Female* Blue Cayman and Cayman Brac iguanas (Cyclura nubila caymenesis or Lewisi)
max out at about 16"svl, 4-8 lbs. Please see my website for details.Keep in mind
that pure bred ones cannot be bought or sold over state lines legally.
Or there are desert iguanas which are readily available and from the United States.
These do not get very big at all.
