: CARROLL COUNTY TIMES (Westminster, Maryland) 21 March 02 Family hopes lost pet lizard returns home (Jamie Schmidt)
: A 4-foot-long iguana is apparently on the loose in downtown Westminster, and his owners are hoping someone will return him safe and sound.
: He is described as St. Patrick's Day green in color with some brown and orange shades, especially if he has been eating carrots. He favors vegetables and chicken breast, and weighs around eight pounds.
: He goes by the name "Marty."
: The Prechtel family, who live on Bond Street, said their pet disappeared around two weeks ago.
: "He had been acting strange the week before [he vanished]," said Jackie Prechtel, the mother of the house. "Once a month or so he goes through a period where he'd look for a mate, and he starts roaming the house. He had been acting like that for about a week, the week before he went missing. I thought maybe he was sick and maybe had gone somewhere to die."
: Nicky Ratliff, executive director of the Humane Society of Carroll County Inc., said that animals don't just disappear when they are going to die.
: Ratliff also said she is not sure of Marty's chances for survival outside his home.
: "It hasn't been down to freezing for a while, so he still could be out there," Ratliff said, adding that anyone with a missing pet should call the Humane Society.
: According to the Green Iguana Society, iguanas are notorious escape artists. The group recommends searching outside for a lost iguana on walls or rooftops, since iguanas can climb brick.
: The family is moving soon and have been boxing up their valuables. They still have seen no sign of Marty.
: The Prechtels have had Marty for two years. Jackie's son, Dylan, 8, thinks his pet looks like a dinosaur. Jackie added that Marty has distinguishing marks. On the left side of his belly is a black spot and there is a lump on his jaw, also on the left side.
: "People, when they would come into the house, were either totally fascinated by him or scared and wouldn't get within 10 feet of him," Jackie said. "Marty was mellow. You could hold him."
: Marty is wanted back at home, and Jackie said there will be a reward if he is returned.
: "They are really high-maintenance animals," Jackie said, adding that Marty needs weekly vitamins. Marty is her second iguana.
: "You have to get his temperature up to 80 or 100 degrees every day," Jackie said. "Their diet is really important. Certain vegetables you can't give them, broccoli and cauliflower, and 40 percent of the diet should be green and leafy kale, spinach, and romaine. They shouldn't have many bananas or mushrooms."
: If anyone has seen Marty, call Jackie Prechtel at 410-876-2887.
: If you have a missing pet, call the Humane Society to file a report at 410-848-4810.
