Fear Factor is only 1 show on 1 network that is responsible for this type of thing.
MTV's Kidnapped featured 2 shows in which reptiles were used. One, an adult savannah, was placed on a contestant's stomach close to her face because she was scared of it. The other, they poured a mix of corn, king and milk snakes along with a large boa on a boy sitting in a large bin type container.
There is a show on ABC hosted by Jon Macenro (spelling is wrong but he was the tennis guy with an attitude) where they dropped both an alligator and a large snake from a cable suspended from the ceiling in front of a contestant to scare them.
CBS is in hotwater for an episode of survivor where they showed contestants killing a live animal for food which is a violation of federal law
The networks don't care because it does not hurt them if you don't watch. HOWEVER -it hurts their advertisers if you don't watch because then you don't see their commercials. The best route to get at the networks is to find out what advertisers had commercials during that show and write them letters telling them you will no longer buy their products if they continue to support that type of thing.
Also, writting to Animal Activist groups can help but BEWARE of backlash
