In Reply to: Concerned about an iguana bite.. posted by Kama on March 12, 2002 at 04:21:38:

: I was planning on getting an iguana real soon, but I am concerned about being bitten. I have read through all of the forum and have seen many posts of people being bitten. When you do get bit does it hurt real bad and bleed a whole lot? The iguana I was thinking of getting is around 6 to 7 inches SVL and was tail whipping and opening his mouth like he was 10 foot long. I thought that was quite funny, but was concerned about trying to tame him down because I really don't want to be bitten. And also, how well do iguana's tame down compared to other reptiles, and around how long would it take for him to be calm and let me handle him? Any advice would really help alot and also, thanks in advance for any replies! =)

Even the tamest can and DO bite. You have to know how to read your iguana. Mine is SO laid back, but if you try to take him off the computer monitor or off his special stuffed moose, he tries to bite me. As soon as he's off, he's fine.

One day he saw his reflection in the window and he was trying to get at it. I pulled the shade down and quick as anything he went for my hand.

They can get a bit aggressive during breeding season. Mine didn't bite in over a year until that started. One day he started bobbing his head at me like mad and bit my hand.

Now I know what that means, when he starts I walk away or say NO real loud or give him one of his stuffed iguanas.
