In Reply to: thats not true. my iggy never shows ANY aggressiveness N/P posted by Alona on March 12, 2002 at 07:10:01:
I was talking about the potential problems this person may face, not necessarily all iguanas in general. Of course there are some less agressive igs, and many are snuggly, but I also know from personal experience that no amount of knowledge or care can conclusively dictate an iguana's personality, and that many igs, especially males in breeding season, can be a handful. therefore, my statement stands. Anyone contemplating ownership should be prepared for the hazards, and this is certainly one of them....
And, if you're referring to my statement about having been bitten or will be, once again, nothing is absolute. However, I can tell you that I was recently contacted by a woman who wanted to get rid of her 8 year old iguana because he had bitten her severely after 8 years of being a household member. The iguana had escaped, and she was extracting him from under the bed. One of her statements to me was "I didn't even know they had teeth" *sigh* ANY iguana will bite in the right circumstances.
Last year my companion of 11 years, Puzzly, our chow mix dog, bit OFF 1/2 inch of my right thumb. Right about the middle of the nail, bone and all. Amputated it. Did I ever think that my best animal friend would bite me, much less this severely? Of course not. However, he was caught in an electric fence, in a creek, in the water. It was killing him. I rescued him, and lost a piece of myself in the process. This was the right circumstances for him to bite me. Iguanas, being reptiles, are less predictable than mammals, in my opinion. One never knows what an ig may consider "extreme circumstances". Bug evidently thought the circumstances were extreme enough to bite my left thumb a year ago... The period from September 2000 to May 2001 was not a good time for me and my thumbs...
By the way, Puz is OK, he survived the ordeal, and he's still my best animal friend...

JohnT
