In Reply to: PE, I try not to dehumanize anyone, but I am fussy about some things. posted by jif on March 09, 2002 at 20:56:15:

: My adoption application includes about 10-12 questions, most pertaining to whether the applicant has owned herps in the past, if they have a qualified vet, if there are small children in the household, and I also ask for a couple of personal references. I will do phone interviews, at my expense, and then request an interview at my home (so my privacy is invaded also). I get a chance to see how the people react with the iguanas and how the iguanas react to the people. If adoptive parents think that I'm invading their privacy if I ask to do a home visit then I'm not sure I want them caring for one of my lizards. Most adoptive parents are more than happy to show us their set-ups and receive any advice we may have for them.

:
: Here is an example of why we do what we do. Last month at the herp show I had a very sweet little female iguana along that is available for adoption. A "gentleman" seemed very interested in her, asking if he could adopt her on the spot and take her home that day (something which I will not do). He handled her well and she seemed quite comfortable with him. I questioned him fairly intensely on diet, heat, housing and humidity issues. He had almost all of the correct answers but blew it when he told me he already had 4 iguanas that he kept in a single enclosure. Later on that day I hear from a couple of the vendors that this particular "gentleman" had twice been convicted of stealing herps from pet stores. I did some research of my own and found this information to be quite true. This is not the kind of person I want adopting my lizards.
