I currently don't charge a surrender fee or an adoption fee but I'm seriously considering both. When someone is giving up an animal and you are taking it from them you are basically providing them with a service. Most service providers charge a fee whether it be a plumber, appliance repairman or an attorney. A surrender fee can cover the cost of initial vet care, fecal test, and other expenses. I'm also thinking of requiring that all enclosures and equipment be surrendered. This helps the rescue out and discourages the owners from acquiring another animal.
I've also concluded that adoptions fees may be necessary. A couple of months ago I was doing an educational display and adoption table at a local herp show. I had two very nice iguanas with me that were available for adoption (for display as I don't adopt on site), no fee. A woman came into the show with a large dog crate occupied by a fairly nice pair of iguanas. She ended up selling both lizards, the male for $150, female $100. I came home without any potential adoptors. It occurred to me at that time that some monetary value needs to be put on the adoptees.....some folks just think free is valueless. An interesting side-note...the male that was sold for $150 came to me the following month at the show as a surrender, including a $50 donation.
