In Reply to: Lights and calcium that I was using. posted by Linda on February 28, 2002 at 11:07:47:
: The calcium was a powered form, run of the mill pet store. I do not remember the brand name as I tossed it right away.
: Now Lizzy is on liquid calcium from the vet once a day, it was twice for the first two weeks after her vet stay. I also give her the antibiotics once daily.
: Was given the powered food that is mixed with water and she also gets fed this once a day. bathing was twice a day now down to once also.
: The lights came with the cage. They sit on top and were about 12 or so inches from her highest shelf, which is wher she laid. There are three sockets for the bulbs, the lights I purchsed from a pet store. Light blue in color and of course show an iguana on the label lokking very healthy.
: Now, with the vet and tech's help Lizzy now has the iguana 5.0 light and fixture. I am still usuing the old light with now a basking light in there, asked the vet and she okay for now.
: I also purchsed one of those cermaic heat elements that I use only in the winter for added warmth. This I have had all the time and is also above the cage.
: Living in Chicago as everyone knows the winters are cold so I needed to make sure I keep Lizzy's enclosure at the correct temp levels, hottest area for basking and a cool spot as well.
: Yes I have probably spent maybe 1500.00 so far for care, cages, lights now.Who cares though, the main point is to keep Lizzy in the correct conditions that she will get well and stay this way.
: It's not over either, vet care will continue for who knows how long and i will be needing a bigger cage. She is confined to the bottom now. We have had to take the light and place inside the cage usuing very sturdy wire to get closer to Lizzy while she is kept from climbing.
: I have an extra heater in the room during the winter and also use a humidifier.
: She actually loves to be sprayed, I do this when she is soaking in her tub as well and she closes her eyes and rolls her head from side to side and enjoys the man made rain, actually great to see this.
: This morning I gave her her favorite chopped collard greens, some pre cooked squash and other veggie mix. She adores mango but i only give small amounts. I also give mustard, dandelions and she does like the dandelions more.
: I chop everything small as well.
: The vet told me to handle her like she is made of glass and I do. I can see her gaining her strength back and the healing process taking place.
: From now on I will voice more here, seems that through ignorance I have learned much, yes my Lizzy had to suffer but hopefully now with my vet, the technicians there and people here she will be a very big beautiful girl in no time.
: Thanks everyone, input and advise is always needed by me.
