I'll have to post a few pictures of our 5-7 yr old boys who went their first year or more with no UV, fed strictly romaine, and kept in a 20 gal long. They are all about the size of a 1 yr old HEALTHY iguana.
When they are subjected to conditions like that as a young kid, I do feel it will affect them for the the rest of their life, as well as dramatically decreasing the amount of years they will be with us.
The biggest killer I have seen is animal protein. If you have not witnessed kidney failure, you DONT WANT TO.
But for the record... Our biggest WAS 9 yrs old, 16 lbs, 59" STL. He passed away April 2001 of various problems, but mostly from the crystallization of his vital organs (started with the kidneys). The largest we have living with us now is 4.5 years old, 7.1 lbs, 18" SVL, 38.5" TL, 56.5" STL. He is also starting to show some signs of early kidney failure... I just hate it when the big guys get ill... Tears me apart.

: No, I thought I'd read it somewhere but I could be wrong. One of the best resources would have been asking the guy whose iguana lived in captivity to age 29! Unfortunately I have not had such luck, but my last iguana rescue was 5 ft and still growing before he died. Perhaps he would have stopped had he lived a few more years. I would be interested in more research on this. My original point was more that you can't count on the fact that they are going to stop growing or not get any bigger... because they can grow for many many years.
