In Reply to: Here's some pointers on your diet.... posted by JNelson on February 19, 2002 at 11:22:51:
: #1 Make your greens such as Collards your MAIN staple and supplement with the other stuff.
: #2 Use Apples and alfalfa sparingly. I usually only give crushed alfalfa to mine a few times a month. They get protein in the green beans as well.
: #3 Are you peeling your grapes? Only using the flesh of the squash? The peelings are harder to digest.
: #4 as an afterthought, how clean was the house he came from? Igs that are allowed to free roam will injest things quite easily. They have been known to swallow coins, panty's and even pantyhose! I wonder if he's done that? Keep your floor clear of objects and vacumed. Hair can also cause a blockage.
: Hopefully other people here on the forum will give you more suggestions.
: Considering what you've told us about his bowel movements I would STRONGLY recommend an exray as soon as possible. That way they can not only check for a blockage, but also for kidney problems. Good luck and let us know how he does. J
Thanks for the suggestions. It is so hard to figure out what is right and wrong to feed them. I was going by Melissa Kaplan's iguana diet when I fed him...I heard it was one of the best. She basically says that you should feed the "salad" mixture as the main staple, and the greens to supplement. I will change that around. I do have a vet appointment for him on Thursday with a good reptile vet in my area. He didn't have free roam of his old place, he was basically in an upstairs computer room...he may have swallowed something. If he does have a blockage, though, would he be going at all? He has gone twice, and we've had him about two weeks (which is more than he used to go, according to the former owner). I will also begin peeling my grapes. Thanks again for all of your help.
