completely banning is not the answer. a lot of what we know about some species of herps has been obseved in captive specimens. also, a lot more herps are killed for their skin and meat than for the pet trade. but i think a better permit system for import and breeding would help cut down on some abuses.
also, if we set up a permit system for breeding or even ownership of reptiles, this should also extend to other commonly abused and mistreated animals, eg, hamsters, parrots, cats, dogs ... hmm, maybe this wouldn't be such a popular idea anymore. well, it would be with PETA. (hamsters are even more of a thowaway pet than herps are. i've never heard stories about 6 year olds squeezing the eyes out of a leopard gecko and it not getting any veterinary care, but i've heard of this happening to hamsters more than once. they have just as much a capacity to suffer and are their lives are not worth any less because they weren't shipped in from asia.)
: I feel banning the import of iguanas and other commonly abused herps is an obvious answer to the problem. With a smaller population in the US, the upped prices of the herps will make prospective owners think twice about getting a pet they probably couldn't handle.
